Derek Spencer had his directorial debut with his experimental short film titled Personally, I Find it Rude to be Boring which was released in 2024. With the film off to an amazing festival year start and being a Brooklyn Film Festival selection, I had the pleasure of meeting him on opening night.
Personally, I Find it Rude to be Boring is unique, yet familiar, disorienting, yet balanced, and puts a new spin on the ‘one-take’ style of filmmaking. Having spent much of his career in the theater world, Derek is bringing that universe into film and is really shaking the table with his innovative concepts.
During this chat, we discussed Derek’s processes, recent and past work, how his art imitates life, his inspirations, and so much more.
